Can a Vegetarian or Vegan Diet Affect Your Oral Health?

Although there’s no denying the benefits of eating fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods, it’s not uncommon for vegan diets to cause oral health issues. Here are a few things you should know to keep your mouth healthy.

Going Vegan Can Harm Your Smile

A vegan diet can keep your body healthy, but simple mistakes can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Not only can you be at risk of various health issues, but it can also affect your teeth and gums negatively, like enamel loss. Meat and dairy counteract acidity in the mouth from the foods and drinks you consume. They also promote strong enamel to make it more resistant to decay. Without meat and dairy, your teeth can be more vulnerable to cavity-causing bacteria that can erode your enamel. Once your enamel is gone, it won’t grow back. 

Practice a Balanced Diet

Calcium deficiency is a very common issue with plant diets, but you can prevent it by eating plenty of broccoli or soybeans. For your body to absorb calcium properly, you’ll need plenty of vitamin D, which is found in fish and dairy. If you don’t consume fish or dairy, add milk alternatives to your diet, like almond or soy. You can also spend about 15-30 minutes outside with your face and arms exposed to soak up vitamin D from the sun.

Your body also relies on vitamin B12, which is found in leaner meats. Vitamin B12 supports the building of red blood cells. Low B12 levels can cause a variety of physical and mental health problems, like fatigue and depression. Seaweed is a great source of vitamin B12, as well as tofu.

Watch Your Snacking 

Those with a plant-based diet often confess to feeling less full after a meal, which can lead to a lot of snacking to meet the body’s energy requirements. Frequent snacking isn’t good for your teeth. It may raise the pH level of your mouth, which makes saliva acidic. You’ll be at risk of cavities, gum disease, and many other preventable issues.

If you’re requiring more snacks during the day, brush your teeth after every meal to remove food residue and plaque. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, rinse your mouth with water to combat bacteria and high pH levels.

You don’t have to sacrifice your smile to follow a vegan diet. A daily supplement can also ensure you’re receiving the nutrients you need for a healthy mouth and body.
