Even though fluoride in water has been shown to prevent at least 25% of cavities in people of all ages, fluoride treatments are still a key part of strengthening the developing teeth of children. Most adults get it from toothpaste and tap water, but can fluoride treatments be beneficial to them, too? Here’s why adults should consider getting fluoride treatments as well as some of the benefits that come with them.
What Is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a mineral that’s naturally occurring in the Earth’s crust and all natural bodies of water. It’s also added to public water supplies in the United States and various other countries in small amounts through a process called water fluoridation. It’s commonly used in dentistry to help strengthen enamel because when saliva has fluoride in it, your teeth can take it in and become stronger and more resistant to tooth decay.
How Fluoride Treatments Can Benefit Adults
Even though we often hear about fluoride treatments being for children, studies show that topical fluoride applications can significantly benefit adults as well. There are many circumstances that may be putting you at a moderate to high risk of cavities and warrant extra protection with a fluoride treatment, such as:
- Prescription medications or radiation treatments that reduce saliva flow and increase the risk for developing cavities
- Gum recession as we age, which exposes the vulnerable roots of our teeth
- Additional protection for the margins of dental restorations such as crowns and bridges
- Orthodontic treatments, which can be more difficult to clean and keep making it harder to keep cavities at bay
- Preventing cavities in patients who are prone to them
- Keeping cavities from forming between your teeth if you neglect daily flossing
- Re-mineralizing enamel and reducing tooth sensitivity
Types of Fluoride Treatments
If you choose to receive fluoride treatments, either the dentist or the hygienist will dry your mouth and apply fluoride gel or foam to your teeth, which generally comes in several flavors. They will instruct you not to swallow during the procedure which should only last a few minutes. In some cases, your dentist may prescribe a special fluoridated mouthwash, toothpaste, or gel to use at home. Your dentist will prescribe these treatments based on your needs and risk of cavities.
If you’re prone to cavities or have any of the other above factors, consider asking your dentist for a fluoride treatment. No matter how old you are, fluoride can help keep your teeth healthy and your smile shining bright!
